I've Created this Website as a Journal of my Entrance into the World of Blogging
As I've come to learn, the term blog can refer to many different things. Many years ago my father created a website that he continues to add to content to regularly. At the time, the term blog was really new, not many used it, and fewer knew what it actually referred to. In reality, his website, which I provide a link to on the sites i :-) page, is actually a blog. As is my husband's newly created Photography website, which I've also linked to. If you 'Google' definitions for the word blog you find many different definitions, so my conclusion is that a blog is any type of online journaling activity. It can take many different forms and be focused on different mediums, but the key criteria are always:
1. It's intended to share online with others
2. It's updated regularly
3. It's generally a form of recreation for the creators, but can, in many instances, also be utilized to generate income.
Wikipedia defines 'blog' as a discussion, but I think that definition really refers to a MAB, which they talk about later in their article on blogs. A MAB is a multi authored blog. An interesting tidbit I picked up there is that Twitter is a micro blogging forum. I guess I knew that at one time, but forgot it, and since I never saw any reason to start a blog, I never really caught on to the whole Twitter craze...although I do have a Twitter account...I basically use it to:
1. Subscribe to or follow other bloggers that tweet about things I'm interested, especially tech news. But while I may follow them, I don't even know enough about Twitter to use it to quickly find those tweets, therefore it's function as a quick source of news and trend is completely lost on me.
2. Re-tweet things that I see and like, either for my followers (I have 6, 4 I know and 2 are strangers) because I think what I'm tweeting is cool and they should know about it. Or, as is more often the scenario, I need to like something so that I get credit for it, as in the case of Squidoo, which is where I have my few 'real' blogs. By liking something on different social forums, I get Squid points, and when I've accumulated enuf points, I get a trophy (yippee!) and sometimes new tools unlocked to use. There was a pink theme called 'Bubblegum' that I've wanted for a long time, and it's not clear right now at what level it's unlocked to me, but I just kept liking things and getting to higher levels until I got the theme unlocked to me...which happened yesterday (1/28/13)!!!
